Challenge Coins Pins
Challenge Coins are a symbol of camaraderie and
unity within a military group, team, or club. Each is uniquely designed
for your organization.
These coins are most often used for military groups,
but many other organizations use them to promote camaraderie and
team spirit. They are double-sided and much thicker than a lapel
pin or standard US coin. They are of highest quality, with recessed
areas sandblasted to provide contrast and detail to the design.
Where did the challenge coin originate?
The first use of challenge coins goes back to a
unit in World War I. A wealthy lieutenant had coins custom made
for his unit as a symbol of unity. One young pilot carried it with
him always. This pilot’s plane was shot down behind enemy
lines. He was captured, but escaped. He had to disguise himself
as a civilian to evade the Germans. However, he no longer had identity
papers with him. When he was discovered by French soldiers, he produced
his challenge coin as proof of his allegiance. His story inspired
the rest of his unit to always carry their coins.
What is the “Challenge”?
The challenge is determined by the group or organization
that has the coins minted. When one member of the group produces
the challenge coin to another member, that person has 60 seconds
to produce their challenge coin. If the challenged fails to produce
his/her coin within that timeframe, then he/she loses. The consequences
are determined by the group, but originally entailed buying the
other person a drink.
